Cave In - Until I Finally Get This Record

This is a record I've been meaning to pick up for a long time, but never got around to it. Plus, they can be hard to find. Plus I wanted the color version, not the black version. PLUS I wanted the multi color version, not the double clear. The album is Cave In's Until Your Heart Stops. An album that I think was so far ahead of it's time when it came out in 1998. I can't name one album that had the feel of this one in the late 90s. Maybe Vision of Disorder's Imprint, which was another album that was completely different than what everyone else was doing at the time. Interestingly enough, both albums were released in 1998. Another interesting connection between these two releases, is the album they released right afterwards, sounded like a totally different band. It's almost like they tried to do something so different, that they burnt themselves out.

I'm really happy with this pick up. One of the few that's lived up to my own internal hype. Colors and quality of the jacket are top notch. Which is to be expected from a company like Hydra Head. They've always made beautiful records. Even back in the late 90s, they were on top of their game.

The damn labels look great too. This release would cost a fortune to make now. I'd love to know what this sold for new. Maybe 20 bucks plus shipping? This would be a $30 record now probably. Maybe I can find out from the Hydra Head dudes.

  2. I'm sure you said in an email not long ago that you were done collecting... yet this blog suddenly seems to be on fire!

I got this when it came out. No idea what I paid though. But I remember this funny thing... I ordered multiple copies. Probably three. I still have this blue & orange version, and a clear version, but I think I may have bought an extra clear one to trade back then as I was doing a lot of trading at that time. Anyway, when it came I played it & a few seconds in it skipped. I tried another record and the same thing. I tried every record I had and they all skipped. I was annoyed and actually phoned up whoever sent it to me (I think it was Lumberjack distribution who were handing Hydrahead's mailorder at the time). I just remember complaining that the records skipped and I wanted to know if anyone else had complained. Apparently no, I was the only one. I was not happy though as they were relatively expensive back then & I seriously wanted to send them back, so pissed off I was. Anyway, I think i took it to someone else's house to play it on a different player & it played fine. I was relieved that I didn't have to air mail three double LPs back to the States.

    1. Done collecting, but not buying! The best posts are yet to come man. I can't wait.

Great story. Needle issue I guess. I wonder if it would have been a better story if you did send them back, then like a year later got another copy and it skipped as well :)

  3. Collecting / buying. Not sure there's much of a difference there tbh!

On reflection, the story was a bit crap. More of a memory than a story. I guess i just recall the excitement immediately turning to disappointment for this record. But once i recorded it onto minidisc(!) the love began. Great album of our time.

    1. I think there's a difference. Ask yourself this: Do you collect food?

Mini disc! hahah A minute of fun, and a lifetime of embarrassment. I had one too.

  4. Well no, of course I don't collect food. I buy it. But I think the difference with food over Cave In records is that I NEED food. I would say that if you were buying records then you wouldn't care about pressings. But if you specifically went after this on the blue / orange color combo then that is collecting.

Anyway, it matters not. I thought what you meant a few weeks ago was that you had all the records you need & aren't looking to add any more to your household. But I'm pleased that isn't the case :o)
